IF ASBOs are a self-fulfilling prophecy (Examiner Dec 10) that turn teenagers to a career in crime and time in prison, then are we also to believe that earlier verbal reprimands from teachers or parents are the first step towards a teenager’s ASBO? Do these so called experts in the “think tank” want children to grow up secure from any style of reprimand? It is unlikely most of the disruptive young brood who may eventually earn an ASBO have the discipline and patience to cope with the scouts or martial arts. Read

IN reply to Rita Rearguard (Mailbag, December 10), I wish to defend my fellow residents of the upper Colne Valley. She states that the “rebellious passengers” off the 9.30am train from Marsden rushed the ticket barrier again. I wish to point out that there is no such train as the 9.30am from Marsden, so this would suggest that the rebels were not from the Colne Valley. For this accusation to be true the 8.59am from Marsden would have to have been 20 minutes late or the 9.59am 20 minutes early. In either case the passengers would have had every right to be a bit rebellious! Read
