IT did come as a surprise to me when taking a closer look at the rainfall records for this area that we actually only have to go back to 2007 to find a drier April. Huddersfield recorded less than 3mm of rain that month as high pressure dominated to the north east of the UK. So the 8.2mm so far this month is a downpour in comparison. We then need to go back to 1980 to find a month so far equal with 2011. With some rain expected this week, I think we are looking at the second driest since 1974 and probably the ninth driest out of the last 100 years. If we take the two months together – March and April, 2011 – it would have been the driest eight weeks certainly since the drought year for Yorkshire in 1995 that required tankers to keep the taps on by September of that year. It could well though turn out to be the driest March and April since before the long hot summer of 1976 but, of course we have a summer to go and there are no guarantees that the fine weather will continue. Pollen Forecast: Low to Medium in mostly cloudy fresher conditions with the wind from the north east limited precautions necessary. Read
