A COMPANY manufacturing horse transporters is hoping for a clear round in the Examiner Business Awards.

Equi-Trek Ltd, based at Meltham, has found a ready market for its high-quality products, which range from horse trailers to large luxury motorised transporters.

The firm opened its first small manufacturing premises in 2004 and began production of a unique side-loading trailer which provided accommodation for horse and owner.

Three years later, Equi-Trek Ltd moved to larger premises and appointed its first European distributor.

In 2008, the company introduced its first motorised horsebox, based on a Peugeot chassis. The model proved an instant success and Equi-Trek had to open another factory to cater for demand.

The firm further extended its range to produce a three-horse box with full living accommodation – which was exhibited very successfully at the Equitana exhibition in Essen, Germany.

Another new product, a five-horse box was launched last year – calling for another factory to be opened – while this year has seen the introduction of a new Trail-Treka trailer at one end of the scale and a nine horsebox at the other.

Managing director Raymond Janion said: “Plans for 2011 include opening an apprentice training scheme to give young people the chance to train and provide a skilled workforce for the future.

“Our success is due to being at the forefront of design and a desire for excellence – driven by an outstanding team of dedicated employees who are always prepared to go the extra mile.”

He added: “We were proud to receive the SME of the Year Award at the 2009 Examiner Business Awards and our continued growth has helped the local economy. We now occupy over 150,000sq ft of factory space and employ in excess of 100 people.”
