Green Building Store
A COMPANY providing “green” building materials continues to demonstrate a pioneering approach to sustainability.
Green Building Store, based at Bolster Moor, manufactures and supplies innovations for sustainable buildings, including water-saving products, natural building materials and Passivhaus products.
The company – and construction division Green Building Company – are wholly owned and run by Environmental Construction Products Ltd, a company which has specialised in sustainable building products since 1995.
Its recent achievements include the completion of a low-energy Passivhaus-designed home at Denby Dale. The three-bedroom detached house boasts minimal heating – using 90% less energy for space heating than the UK average – with anticipated heating costs of less than £75 a year.
Chayley Collis, marketing manager at Green Building Store, said: “Instead of complicated design and expensive bolt-on renewables, Passivhaus design relies on a simple ‘tea cosy’ effect maximising the use of super insulation and stringent airtightness.
“By combining this with passive solar gain and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems, Passivhaus designs can create healthy and comfortable buildings that require minimal heating.”
Now the company hopes the Denby Dale scheme will serve as a template for more Passivhaus developments.
Among the company’s other initiatives, Green Building Store has helped Metro made major water and cost savings with the installation of water-saving WCs and urinals at three bus stations, including Huddersfield. The Huddersfield site has saved £7,500 in the first year since installation – £6,500 through reduced water bills and £1,000 in washroom maintenance savings – as well as seeing a 38% cut in water consumption.
The improvements at Huddersfield followed on from a successful pilot scheme at Dewsbury bus station, which resulted in water bills savings of 40%. The products have also been used at Halifax bus station and are now being rolled out to other bus stations, including Leeds and Keighley.
