Crompton Mouldings secures Shopbox contract

A PRODUCT which impressed the hard-nosed investors on TV’s Dragon’s Den has gone into production at a Brighouse company.
Shopbox – billed as the world’s first multi-temperature secure box – is now being manufactured by Crompton Mouldings, of Armytage Road, after Yorkshire-based entrepreneurs Stuart Archbold and Andy Leslie secured funding for their idea.
They believe that Shopbox will revolutionise home deliveries and appeal to online retailers and customers alike by allowing goods to be delivered when the customer isn’t at home.
The inventors said more than a billion pounds was lost each year in failed and repeat home deliveries. But Shopbox offers retailers a solution by providing a safe place to securely deliver goods while the customer is out.
Shopbox also has frozen and chilled compartments.
The product was invented by Mr Archbold, chairman of Leeds-based Archbold Logistics Ltd.
He came up with the concept following his own experiences of the inconvenience and expense of failed deliveries.
The product caused a stir among the Dragons when it was unveiled earlier this year on the BBC investment programme – resulting in panellist Peter Jones proposing a record investment of £1m, the largest sum ever offered on the programme.
Tony Douglas, commercial manager at Crompton Mouldings, said: “Shopbox is quite a complicated bit of engineering. It comprises three parts and we are moulding the top for it.
“It also includes a refrigeration system which is being provided by another firm.”
“The initial order is for 500, which is the amount that has been funded. After that, it all depends on how well it takes off.”
Crompton Mouldings, formed in 2007 and based at West Vale Buildings, Wakefield Road, moulds a wide range of items, including grit bins, water butts and forecourt bins as well as its own-designed garden composter, Composphere.
Mr Leslie, chief executive of shopbox, said: “The Shopbox concept is simple and long overdue.
“Everyone loves the convenience of online shopping, but hates the inconvenience of having to wait in.
“With Shopbox you don’t have to and as a result there is an even bigger opportunity for growth in this sector. It is a great solution for both consumers and retailers alike.”
Mr Archbold added: “Running a logistics company, I have experienced first-hand the expense that missed and repeat deliveries has on a business.
“Shopbox offers the perfect solution to these costs, allowing deliveries to be made at any point in the day.”
