YORKSHIRE has seen a fall in business failures, according to latest figures.
Business information group Experian said there were 120 insolvencies among the region’s firms during September. That compares with 152 the previous month and 139 a year ago.
The region was the top performer in the UK with only the East Midlands reporting a similar decline – to 96 during September against 99 in August and 122 a year ago.
The north-east was worst-hit with insolvencies more than doubling to 60 from 26 in August. There were also big monthly increases for Greater London (371 from 287) and the south-east (234 from 197).
Businesses with six to 19 employees saw the biggest annual drop in the rate of insolvencies while firms employing 500 or more saw the greatest year-on-year increase.
Building and construction remained the worst hit sector with 260 failures last month against 247 in August.
The number of insolvencies fell for engineering, chemicals and textiles but rose slightly for printing, paper and packaging, brewing, electricals and mining.
