John Lewis reports record sales

DEPARTMENT store John Lewis reported a strong start to its clearance sale – after trading on Monday and Tuesday this week beat previous records for a single day’s takings.

The firm said sales of £27.8m on December 27 were up by 54% on the same date last year and 30% up on the same date in 2008.

For the first three full days of the clearance sale, takings were up by 26.2% on the same days in 2009.

Nat Wakely, director for selling operations at John Lewis, reported “an overwhelmingly positive response”. Top sellers included laptops, pillows and bath and shower gift sets.
