A WORKERS’ co-operative is bringing big benefits to local organisations.

Elland-based Suma Wholefoods, run in the interests of its 150 workers, is also providing hands-on support to worthy causes close to home.

Among its initiatives, Suma sponsored the construction of a classroom at Old Earth Primary School in Elland and worked with Brighouse High School to encourage students to grow their own food and undertake projects linked to the curriculum.

Suma has also contributed start-up income to Holmfirth Fairtrade Co-operative and Green Valley Grocers at Slaithwaite.

Brand development team member Paul Collins said: “We are really pleased to have won the award.

“We hope other businesses can follow our suit in working with the community.

“This highlights our ongoing commitment to environmental work and work within the community.”

Also nominated in the category, sponsored by Stafflex, were Holmfirth Vineyard and Insight with Passion
