DISCOUNT retailer Poundworld has been named one of Yorkshire’s winners.
Normanton-based Poundworld is ranked sixth in the regional league table and 68th UK-wide in the Sunday Times PwC Profit Track 100 league table, which ranks the country’s privately-owned firms with the fastest-growing profits over the last three years.
Eight companies based in Yorkshire and the North-East are among the top 100. Those firms together employ 3,445 people – having added 1,887 jobs over the past three years – and generated combined profits of £82.5m.
Poundworld reported annual profit growth of more than 52% for the past three years with its latest earnings standing at £5.49m.
The company employs more than 2,000 staff and has more than 200 stores, including ones in Huddersfield and Dewsbury.
The top performer in Yorkshire and the North-East is Newcastle-based Kilfrost, which makes de-icing fluid for the aviation industry and includes airlines BA, KML and Air New Zealand among its customers.
Targeting new markets including the US and China helped profits to grow an average 93% a year over three years to £3.9m in 2011.
Others on the regional list including Sheffield-based outdoor equipment retailer GO Outdoors, which grew annual profits by an average 92% over three years to £7m and Leeds-based vehicle rental broker Nexus Vehicle Rental, which profits grew by an average 70% a year to £4.6m.
