DEVELOPING a love of learning and recognising the type of learner you are is at the heart of the curriculum at Spring Grove Junior, Infant and Nursery School.

This multi-cultural school puts its pupils at the very centre of everything it does and through raising aspirations and providing children with valuable life skills it is helping to provide confident, productive citizens of the future.

Children are encouraged to discover whether they are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner and build on their own strengths to achieve success and include all ability levels.

Most recently the school has started to re-structure its curriculum and give it a much more creative feel.

After achieving the Artsmark Gold it has now been designated a Creative Partnership Change School by the Arts Council.

This three-year programme will bring architect James Copp and artist Dave Hulston into school to work with children developing outdoor areas and using them as an extension of the classroom.

Headteacher Mrs Bibi Laher said the aim was to engage children through a much more fun and creative curriculum while maintaining the high attainment standards which the school already had.

The school has a diverse mix of children from many communities, but children all achieve equally well, such is the commitment of staff to ensure all achieve their full potential.

Mrs Laher said: “Through Creative Partnerships we aim to move away from topic-based curriculum work and go forward with a more cross-curricular approach, transferring children skills to all areas.

“Our aim is to empower children with skills for life by creating confident pupils who know how they learn best.”

A recent project on the Great Fire of London is a fine example, with children writing diary extracts, creating artwork in the style of William Turner and moulding clay houses to represent to spread of the flames from Pudding Lane.

Children have also been using their drama and speaking and listening skills to help others across the country.

They are among schoolchildren from local schools to work with Steve Wright’s Puppet Broadcasting Company to develop DVD materials and learning packs to support PSCHE (personal, social, community and health education) lessons.

Pupils have a strong voice at Spring Grove JIN School, which is reflected by its Investors in Pupils status.

They will play a leading role in the creative programme led by James and Dave, which will take a stronger focus in school from January.

A wooden chest in the outdoor area which could be transformed will allow children to post their initial ideas.

They will be involved in every step of the development of the programme, from planning costings, budgeting and design.

This work will again prepare them with valuable lessons for life and show them that everything which they want and desire cannot always be achieved in a monetary sense.

Working Together is at the heart of everything which happens at this school and as part of the programme children will start a journey to explore their identity, beliefs and values. All will lead to create confident, creative citizens of the future.
