Match report: Huddersfield Giants 22 - 6 Hull KR

EORL Crabtree and Scott Moore celebrated their England call-ups with world-class displays as the Giants completely outplayed second-placed Hull KR.

With hooker Moore prompting and probing from acting half and prop Crabtree devastating from the bench, Huddersfield were on the front foot from start to finish.

But even though the two top forwards crowned an excellent week with such super shows, this was, again, far from being a victory based on individual brilliance.

As usual, it was the collective team effort that was at the real heart of a 10th Super League success of the season, with the likes of full-back Leroy Cudjoe and acting captain Stephen Wild also at the height of their powers.

And with so many others also contributing significantly to the cause, the result was never really in doubt.

With the Giants’ defence far more solid than Rovers’ and with a more clinical attacking edge, Huddersfield were able to dictate the pace throughout.

As a result, the home side were soon making their intentions clear, opening up a 12-0 lead inside 14 minutes.

A Kevin Brown break set the ball rolling, forcing the Robins onto the back foot and creating the opportunity for Moore to crash over by the posts.

Cudjoe made no mistake with the conversion and then doubled his tally three minutes later with a superb touchline goal.

And that proved the icing on the cake to a truly memorable score.

Once again, Brown made it possible.

His high kick to the corner eventually fell invitingly to Paul Whatuira who immediately fed Stephen Wild, and the acting captain passed on to Luke Robinson to evade the cover to touch down.

Hull KR very fortuitously hit back to 12-6 midway through the half when Kris Welham crossed for a Michael Dobson-converted try – but only after the visitors had been awarded a scrum, despite sending out two forwards passes and a knocking-on!

Yet it wasn’t long before the Giants had regained control.

A great Michael Lawrence break and superb charge by Crabtree which put Nick Fozzard flat on his back signalled the revival.

And it took another great try to carve Hull KR open, with Moore’s superb switch pass allowing Lee Mossop to charge through for his first Giants try on his second appearance for the club following his loan move from Wigan.
