Giants 50 - 10 Gateshead. TONY SMITH has a lot to answer for when it comes to the feelings of frustration among the fans over the way his side had performed against lowly Gateshead Thunder!
How on earth were his players expected to match the pre-match excitement that had been generated by the announcement that the popular Australian would be remaining at the McAlpine until the end of the 2003 season.
The announcement brought an immediate end to speculation that he could be leaving to join top Australian clubs West Tigers or St George-Illawarra Dragons.
But it also brought a cheer from the Huddersfield faithful that was as loud as any generated during Smith's 23-month association with the Giants.
So, was it any surprise that in comparison this latest showing from the runaway Northern Ford Premiership leaders seemed as flat as the proverbial pancake?
It may sound almost arrogant to describe a 50-10 triumph as an off-day for the Giants, but that's just what it was.
In terms of spirit and application, opponents Gateshead were the winners.
They clearly played well beyond their means, and a 40-point defeat resulted in a very happy visiting dressing room!
In contrast, the Giants reaction was muted, with Smith describing his side's performance as `very mixed.' At the same time, however, he was full of praise for Gateshead.
But given the side which Smith sent out onto the field, it was always going to be difficult for Huddersfield to better the 76-12 scoreline set against Chorley a fortnight ago.
