Giants 26 - 4 Wildcats. Reilly dismissal clouds exciting display
BUOYANT Huddersfield Giants signalled a return to form by producing one of the most accomplished first-half performances in their Super League existence.
In the four-and-a-half seasons the McAlpine side have experienced life in Super League, they have never had the luxury of leading by 22 points at the break.
Obviously, during last year's sabbatical in the Northern Ford Premiership such leads were common.
But for the Giants to achieve such a feat in Super League - and against a Wakefield side who demolished Warrington at home a week ago - is something that deserves the greatest respect.
And there was certainly no fluke about Huddersfield's fifth win of the campaign, and particularly their dazzling first-half show.
On attack, they were razor-sharp and made the most of the chances that came their way, while on defence they were as solid as a rock.
In recent matches, the Giants have been heavily criticised - and rightly so - for their defensive frailities.
Yet against the Wildcats, they showed obvious pride in their tryline and every player worked 100% to keep the visitors at bay.
And one example in the 23rd minute summed it all up, as big Michael Korkidas attempted to force his way over from close range and instead was hauled 10m back by a whole posse of Giants.
It was, therefore, a crying shame that Wakefield crossed for a last-minute try through Richard Newlove to prevent the Giants from nilling a side for the first time in their Super League history.
