Giants 26 - 4 Wildcats. Reilly dismissal clouds exciting display
The fact the try had been scored following a forward pass in the build up added to the sense of disappointment within the home ranks.
Yet it was the subsequent sending off of in-form Giants full-back Paul Reilly for "alleged striking" as Newlove dived over in the corner that could have the more serious consequences.
A mass brawl which followed was also placed on report by referee Ashley Klein, meaning the disciplinary committee at RFL headquarters at Red Hall could be in for a busy few days.
Yet even though the ending was unsavoury, the rest of the contest was an absolute delight.
The early signs suggested this may just be the Giants day as Wakefield were forced to drop out in the third minute.
Four minutes later Reilly, Gene and Jim Gannon were all held up on the line as the Trinity defence was forced to work overtime.
The Giants defence was also strong at this early stage, with one superb Darren Turner hit on Korkidas forcing the prop to spill the ball.
So it wasn't, therefore, a massive surprise when the Giants took the lead in the 19th minute.
With the big Wakefield forwards having had to soak up so much pressure in the Huddersfied heat, they were powerless to prevent Ben Roarty crashing over from close range after being fed by former Wakefield favourite Paul March.
Brandon Costin failed with the conversion, but a 4-0 lead was still very gratefully received.
