Match report: Giants 6 - 13 Castleford Tigers

In fact, had it not been for a timely intervention just before the break by Brett Hodgson, who partly redeemed himself with a vital block to prevent Rangi Chase’s try-scoring pass, the Tigers could have been virtually out of sight at half-time.

A Dixon penalty on the stroke of half-time did give the visitors a 12-point lead. But with the Giants just two scores behind at the interval after such a shocking opening show, there was at least still some hope. Unfortunately, just ask Leeds who trailed the Giants by that margin early in the second half last Sunday and came back to win!

Despite forcing Castleford to drop-out from under their posts three times at the start of the second half, chances continued to prove almost impossible to create.

And when Paul Whatuira’s break midway through the half was stopped superbly by Richard Owen, who forced the centre into touch, everything suggested this was going be a repeat of the sorry home result against Salford two months ago.

Yet finally, after 64 minutes came that glimmer of hope.

For once, Huddersfield were able to find a bit of fluency and after Good initial work from Robinson, Simon Finnigan and Stephen Wild combined to put Cudjoe over in the corner.

Brett Hodgson added the touchline conversion and the Giants were right back in it.

But such was the nature of this shoddy Huddersfield performance that they failed to capitalise on this ray of hope, and Chase sealed their fate with a 77th-minute drop goal.

Huddersfield’s Academy side suffered a bitterly disappointing 40-10 Championship defeat at Castleford Tigers.

Giants’ tryscorers were Aaron Briggs and Kris Harrop, who also added a goal.

The club’s weekend commitments are completed this afternoon when coach Paul Cook’s Reserves side entertain Castleford at Laund Hill (2.00).

Hull earned their first home win in 16 weeks to put an end to their recent run of poor form as they nervously overcame 14-12 Salford at the KC Stadium.

The win, built on first-half tries from Gareth Raynor and Motu Tony, was their first on home soil since a 28-12 success against Catalans Dragons on February 27 and relieves the pressure on coach Richard Agar, who was given a vote of confidence on Thursday after presiding over a run of just two victories in 12 outings.
