Giants v Wolves match report
SUPER Huddersfield Giants are back at the top!
Coach Nathan Brown’s heroes have once again shown why 2011 could be their year.
Not only did they beat the side they have replaced at the summit of Super League in the highly-fancied Warrington Wolves, they completely outplayed them in all departments.
They attacked better, they defended better and, as a result, controlled the contest from start to finish.
To be honest, the one major disappointment on such a magical night was that they didn’t win by a far higher margin. Their performance clearly merited it.
Even without senior props Keith Mason and Darrell Griffin, the Giants were more than a match for the Warrington pack during an explosive and high-quality opening 40 minutes, something which was, in fact, to continue throughout the contest.
And that was reflected with a thoroughly-deserved 18-10 interval lead.
Within three minutes the home side had made their presence felt with a try on their first meaningful attack.
A neat Leroy Cudjoe pass sent Jermaine McGillvary racing clear down the left.
After making initial ground, the winger then kicked the ball back inside for the alert Scott Grix to gather and race away to score by the posts for Danny Brough to land the first of his three first-half conversions.
Warrington wasted little time finding a response as former Giants captain Brett Hodgson finished off a move on the last tackle and then converted to level the scores.
But that proved the signal for the Giants to find another gear.
With the forwards, led magnificently by Luke O’Donnell, relishing the midfield ferocity and half-backs Kevin Brown and Brough taking control, Huddersfield were 18-6 ahead by the 34th minute.
First, Luke Robinson’s short pass on the back of a second successive Wolves drop-out sent Larne Patrick charging through a hole 30m out and over the line to put the Giants back ahead after 22 minutes.
Then six minute before the break, and following an outstanding run from Grix, the position was created for Robinson to burrow his way over from acting half-back inches from the line.
At that stage it was all Huddersfield.
But on the stroke of half-time, the visitors were handed renewed hope when Hodgson grabbed his second try to keep the Wolves well in the hunt.
But it was the Giants who started the second period the stronger.
