Match report: Leeds Rhinos 6 Huddersfield Giants 38

HEROIC Huddersfield are celebrating another famous victory.

For the first time in over 50 years the men in Claret and Gold have beaten Leeds at Headingley.

Noty since a Yorkshire Cup triumph in 1950 have Huddersfield gained success at the famous old ground.

To the make historic victory even sweeter, the Giants made it a double celebration by returning to the top of Super League XVI.

Unfortunately the second half dismissal of the inspirational Australian Luke O’Donnell and Leeds’ Ryan Bailey for their part in a brawl did take some of the gloss off the momentous night.

But the sight of O’Donnell pointing to the scoreboard to the jeering Leeds fans as he was sent from the field summed up the score was what mattered more than anything else.

The Giants start to the contest wasn’t the greatest in the world, with several schoolboys errors halting their early progress.

But with the Rhinos doing exactly the same against an excellent Giants defence, with Dale Ferguson pulling off a 12th-minute try-scoring tackle on Rob Burrow.

And that whole-hearted effort seemed to be just the spur the Giants needed to step up a gear and take complete control.

Within two minutes Michael Lawrence almost followed up Danny Brough’s kick to score, but there was to be denying of the polished Giants in the 16th minute.

Lawrence after Jamie Simpson had forced off with a heavy knock the position was created for Kevin Brown to take a ball to the line and Ferguson was quickly in at acting half back to dart over from close range with ease.

Brough made no mistake with the conversion and the Giants were on their way to an unbelievable first half lead.

Three minutes later, after great work from O’Donell and in-form prop Darrell Griffin, the ball was worked out to the Giants right for Luke Robinson, Brown and Scott Grix to combine and send Jermaine McGillvary over in the corner for eighth try of the season.
