LEROY CUDJOE couldn’t have celebrated his 100th Giants appearance and a new long-term contract with his hometown club in more spectacular fashion.
The 23-year-old England centre’s display in helping Huddersfield beat plucky Harlequins and secure a fourth-place Super League XVI finish in the process has to rank as one of his best.
The former Newsome Panthers junior was excellent in attack, whether running the ball from deep or close to the visitors' line, and just as influential in defence, helping to save certain tries on a number of occasions.
The Giants were boosted by the return of centre Joe Wardle and back-rower Dale Ferguson after recovering from a hamstring and back injury respectively.
But head coach Nathan Brown resisted the temptation to bring straight back prop Keith Mason, who has recovered from a knee injury.
Instead, the powerful front-rower was named 18th man, with the likelihood of being held back for next Sunday’s home clash against resurgent Leeds Rhinos.
Yet in his absence, the pack were still too strong for their Harlequins counterparts as they built up a commanding 22-6 interval advantage.
The outstanding Cudjoe set the ball rolling in the sixth minute.
After an initial break from Kevin Brown, the Quins struggled to get out on their own danger zone and on the sixth tackle, Luke Robinson’s long pass from acting half-back enabled the England centre to dive over for Danny Brough to add the conversion.
Cudjoe was then forced to produce a couple of memorable defensive efforts during the visitors’ best spell – a vital ankle tap on Luke Dorn and great take of a high kick on his own try-line under heavy traffic being the prime examples – before Huddersfield finally doubled their lead in the 25th minute.
Once again it was a superbly-crafted score, with the ball worked across the face of the Quins defence to Brown, who managed to create the position for Joe Wardle to collect the ball and plunge over the line for a second converted effort.
A third six-pointer followed just three minutes later when a Brough ‘bomb’ was collected by Cudjoe to release the ball out of the tackle for Graeme Horne to score with ease. At 18-0, the home side were in complete control.
