Waiting game goes on for head coach position

INTERVIEWS for the vacant Giants’ head coach’s position are expected to get under way towards the end of next week.

It is believed around 30 quality applications have been received and, once the interview process has started, it will be at least a further fortnight before a final decision is made.

Among those believed to be in the reckoning are several from Australia, with Canterbury coach Steve Folkes and Wests Tigers’ assistant Royce Simmonds still continuing to be linked.

And with the excellent job being done by caretaker coaches Paul Anderson and Keiron Purtill, the club certainly don’t feel they need to be rushed.

“Paul and Keiron are continuing to do an excellent job, and knowing we have individuals like this leading the team is very reassuring,” said Giants chairman Ken Davy.

“It means we can afford to take time choosing the next head coach.”

As well as waiting for an announcement over the next coach, the club are still none the wiser over the arrival of new signing David Faiumu.

The New Zealand Test hooker is still waiting for his paperwork to be completed in Australia so he can join the Giants.

And caretaker coach Anderson admits it’s very frustrating.

“As a club, there’s absolutely nothing more we can do,” he said.

“We’re obviously keeping in touch with David, but we’re totally in the hands of the Australian authorities.”
