Match report: Huddersfield Giants 46 - 6 Harlequins
Mar 23 2009 by Chris Roberts, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
SUPER Huddersfield Giants ended their home drought in spectacular style with an eight-try destruction of the previously in-form Harlequins.
Not since a narrow 25-24 triumph over Bradford Bulls on July 6 last year have the Giants tasted success at the Galpharm Stadium.
But that barren home spell was swept away as head coach Nathan Brown’s men put the earlier home Super League XIV reverses to St Helens and Hull behind them to destroy the stunned Quins in a dazzling eight-try display.
The contest had promised to be one that would again challenge the Giants to the full on their own Galpharm patch.
In the last two games, Harlequins have been one of the form teams of the competition.
They had thrashed Warrington 60-8 at home in their last game and scored 48 points in a stunning success at Salford the week before.
And the visitors threatened to carry on from where they left off in the opening exchanges as only great Giants defence prevented Chris Melling and Will Sharp from giving Quins the lead inside two minutes.
But from the moment the excellent Stephen Wild gave Huddersfield the lead after six minutes there was only going to be one winner.
With the pack in outstanding form – led by prop Keith Mason, who produced one of his most destructive displays in a Giants shirt – the men from the capital were almost powerless to halt Huddersfield’s relentless charge.
Yet again, hooker Scott Moore prompted the attack, while the ever-eager half-back pairing of Kevin Brown and Luke Robinson exploited every weakness in the Quins’ defence.
