Giants can topple Saints: Wildy

CHALLENGE Cup hero Stephen Wild believes the Giants have what it takes to beat St Helens and reach a dream Wembley final.

Huddersfield will face Saints in the last four in a repeat of the 2006 final (which was at Twickenham) after yesterday’s thrilling 16-14 Galpharm victory over Castleford Tigers.

The St Helens Cup showdown will be on the weekend of August 8 and 9 (the date and venue has yet to be confirmed).

Carnegie man-of-the-match Wild, who grabbed his side’s crucial 69th-minute try against the Tigers, admits it will be a tough test.

But the 28-year-old back-rower knows the Giants’ class of 2009 are more than capable of rising to the occasion and toppling the Cup kings.

“We all accept that St Helens in the semi will be hard,” said Wild.

“But if we are to win the Challenge Cup, which we believe we are capable of doing, these are the teams you’re going to have to beat at some stage.

“I think everyone at the club, the players, staff and fans alike, feel we’re not that far away now from picking up a bit of silverware, and it would be fantastic to think it could be at this season’s Challenge Cup final.

“And if we are to do it, we would obviously need to show the same character as we did against Castleford yesterday.

“It was a very tough game, although we didn’t help ourselves with the amount of errors we made.
