Giants' Lawrence desperate to face Leeds Rhinos

MICHAEL LAWRENCE is desperate to retain his Giants starting spot for Sunday’s Super League trip to defending champions Leeds Rhinos.

The 19-year-old centre made a highly-successful return to action in Friday’s 22-6 triumph over second-placed Hull KR at the Galpharm.

That was Lawrence’s first game in four weeks after being rested by head coach Nathan Brown, with the former Newsome Panthers junior stepping back in for the injured Jamahl Lolesi (head).

But with Lolesi in line for a return after needing eight stitches in a wound suffered during the Challenge Cup quarter-final victory over Castleford Tigers two matches ago, Lawrence knows a first game for the Giants at Headingley is far from guaranteed.

"I’d love to play at Leeds, and I’d like to think the way I played against Hull KR will have helped," said the England Academy international.

"A lot could depend on whether Jammer’s back or not. But after the break I’ve just had, I’d love to be part of Sunday’s side.

"It was very frustrating having to sit out three games, because no-one likes missing out and not helping the team.

"Browny told me when he left me out that I’m still young and still learning, but that doesn’t stop me wanting to play.

"The break’s freshened me up and with my energy levels good, I’m ready to go again."
