Giants' Reserves thrash Castleford Tigers

HUDDERSFIELD Giants’ Reserve team continues to go from strength to strength.

Coach Paul Cook’s second-placed side made it nine wins and one draw from 14 games with a superb 50-18 thrashing of Castleford Tigers at Laund Hill.

Apart from one brief spell at the start of the second half, the hosts were in a totally different class as they rattled up nine tries, seven of which were converted by Tom Hemingway.

And it was fitting that impressive Hemingway was among the points.

The scrum-half proved a major attacking force throughout the contest, helping to create a number of tries for his side and forming a useful half-back combination with stand-off Rob Lunt, the brother of first-team hooker Shaun.

But Hemingway and Lunt were not alone in having top displays, with numbers one to 17 all contributing to a thoroughly emphatic triumph.

By half-time, the Giants were out of sight as they stormed into a 28-0 interval lead.

Full-back Elliott Hodgson was the first to make his presence felt, squeezing in at the corner for the opening try after five minutes, before doubling his tally 12 minutes later after great work from Hemingway and hard-working loose-forward Greg Worthington.

Try No3 followed after 25 minutes when winger Greg Johnson stepped wonderfully through heavy traffic to touch down and then, on Huddersfield’s next attack, two exciting charges from substitute Nathan Chappell created the position for Johnson to feed Worthington to finish off.

At 22-0 the Giants were already in complete control, and even the harsh sin-binning of Chappell for a late challenge on a Castleford kicker 10 minutes before the break failed to disrupt the flow.
