Giants Opposition Guide: Wakefield

BEFORE the start of the season, many pundits were predicting Wakefield would struggle to make a meaningful Super League contribution.

But that’s been the case with the Wildcats for several seasons now – and on almost every occasion they end up defying the odds.

It’s as if being written off every year is what brings the best out of the men from Belle Vue, with this season being another prime example.

Wakefield head to the Galpharm this weekend sitting sixth in Super League with 10 wins from their 18 top-flight fixtures.

They made their intentions clear in their opening fixture of the season with an impressive win at Wigan, with former Giants star Brad Drew pulling the strings.

Since then, the victories have come at regular intervals and, with nine rounds of Super League remaining, it would be a massive disappointment if they were to miss out on the play-offs.

The biggest downside to their year so far was the heavy 54-6 home defeat to the Giants, so revenge could be on their minds!

WHEN the Giants thrashed Wakefield 54-6 at Belle Vue on May 24, there was one very high-profile absentee – half-back Danny Brough.

The 26-year-old was left out of the side that day due to a breach of club discipline, and with Brough not pulling the Trinity strings, the home side looked all at sea.

But Brough – who was linked with a possible move to the Giants two months ago – will be around for Sunday’s clash and will obviously be expected to play a key role, just like he did in the match between the two teams at the Galpharm last year.
