Match report: Giants 30 Wakefield 14
Jul 6 2009 by Peter Barrow, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
But with 12 minutes to go to half time the Giants’ concentration in defence slipped and that allowed Scott Grix to cut inside on an angled run to touch down, though Danny Brough could not add the goal.
Points on the board for Trinity but the pattern stayed the same and, after Paul Jackson’s fancy footwork had kept an attack alive, Robinson just failed to get the right pass away and the chance went begging at the line.
Had the Giants headed into half-time almost out of sight the contest could have become a procession, but the visitors retook the field determined to do better.
Aided by a string of penalties early in the second period, back came the Wildcats with on-loan Michael Korkidas close to scoring against his employers before Sam Obst opened the way for Martin to go over – Brough landed his only goal.
Another chance arrived but winger Matt Peterson was judged not to have grounded the ball and the Giants, obviously stung by Wakefield’s revival, managed only to get back on track when Faiumu repeated the trick of diving over from the play-the-ball after Stephen Wild was held at the line.
Trinity again threatened, but Grix was caught on a run to the line and his pass inside ran loose and, with that missed opportunity, the tide turned again.
Once David Hodgson had restored the Giants cushion on 68 minutes with an excellent finish from a Michael Lawrence pass, the home side seemed to finally settle and look in control of the contest.
The Wildcats hit back with a Peterson try, though Obst’s final pass looked forward, but time was running away from them and the icing was put on the cake for the home side with three minutes to go.
Robinson carved out the chance and it was Liam Fulton who reacted first to the low kick to scoot under the posts.
They could have been even more convincing winners as a Danny Sculthorpe drive created an opening but he could not get the ball away cleanly enough to send centre Jamahl Lolesi over the line.
However, the Giants had achieved two major objectives.
They gained the win to take them to third, above a Hull KR side beaten by Catalans Dragons, and produced a home performance that should have their own supporters purring and savouring thoughts of maybe even a home draw in the play-offs.
