Match report: Giants 28 Warrington 10
Jul 20 2009 by Chris Roberts, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
HUDDERSFIELD’S pack men came off the bench to destroy Warrington Wolves and make it another excellent Super League day for the in-form Giants.
In what was a perfect way to support Ken Davy’s half-time announcement of the season-ticket offers for 2010, coach Nathan Brown’s men further cemented their third place in the table with a fourth successive victory to make it 14 for the season.
But with the way the Giants saw off the challenge of a resurgent Warrington, there was so much to suggest the men from the Galpharm are far from finished in 2009.
And at the heart of this latest success were the men on the substitutes’ bench.
Within two minutes of his introduction, prop Paul Jackson was charging over for a rare but thoroughly-deserved score.
Then Eorl Crabtree came on to completely terrorise the Wolves with his strong running and incredible offloads, before Scott Moore joined in the fun to maintain the excellent form he has been showing all season.
Fellow substitute, Martin Aspinwall, also came up with a valuable second-half contribution from his new position in the back row as the Giants produced one of their most accomplished home performances of the season.
As well as the strong work from the replacements, the likes of Luke Robinson was a constant threat all match, while the Giants’ kicking game was the best it’s been.
Yet, having said all this, the home side certainly didn’t have everything their own way.
In fact, Huddersfield did remarkably well to lead 18-0 at the break when considering the nature of the opening 15 minutes.
Although Warrington were forced to drop-out from under their own posts within a minute, the Wolves were in complete command in the opening encounters.
On the back of a 5-0 penalty count, the visitors piled on the pressure.
But on each occasion, Huddersfield’s magnificent defence held firm, with some incredible tryline defence saving the day.
