RISING star Kyle Wood has completed his move to the Giants and immediately set his sights on securing a regular Super League spot.

The 20-year-old scrum half arrives on a three-year contract from Championship club Sheffield Eagles.

Former Wakefield Academy ace Wood knows he faces tough competition to make the No7 spot his own but is confident he has the ability to become Nathan Brown’s first choice.

“There is very strong competition for places, I’m well aware of that,” said Wood, who helped Doncaster to win promotion from Championship I in 2008.

“But I’ve signed to play Super League, and I’m certainly not looking to go out on loan. I want to make my name here.

“I’ve spoken to Nathan (Brown) and he seems like a top bloke as well as obviously being a very good coach. I’ve seen how the young players at the club have developed under him and I’m excited about what he can do for my game.”

Last season, hooker Shaun Lunt arrived from Workington and ended the season first-team regular, and Danny Kirmond had a similarly rapid rise the year before.

Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said: “We consistently watch the lower leagues and have always looked to give an opportunity to players who have excelled and shown promise.

“There are players that bypass the academy systems at Super League clubs and, as our sport is a relatively late maturation game for excellence, then it’s only right to keep scouting.

“Kyle has had a super season in the Championship and we believe that with the benefit of full-time training and working with Nathan Brown and his staff, he can go on to significantly improve his game.

“He can learn from the likes of Brad Drew, Luke Robinson, Kevin Brown and Scott Grix, and the length of deal shows our belief in him.”
