New Zealand boss expecting Huddersfield Giants' Eorl to make Four Nations impact

"Steve was the major concern," said Kearney.

"His eye has opened up a lot more, but it looks fairly unlikely that he’ll be ready for the weekend.

"I’ll have a good look at the video and see what is best for the English match. There is a possibility of getting a couple of guys back from injury. Jeff Lima and Bronson Harrison both ran this morning, which is pleasing."

Parramatta utility back Kris Inu is an option for Matai’s centre spot, but Kearney is also considering switching the St Helens-bound Iosia Soliola from the back row.

"We’re looking through our options," he said.

"Soliola slipped into that position the other night and did a wonderful job. But we haven’t thought through that far yet.

"I guess it’s the beauty of Sia that he can play both positions. His two last performances have been memorable performances in Kiwi jumpers.

"Defensively against France, he was tremendous - and he did a great job for us the week before against Australia."

Twenty-three-year-old Soliola has been signed by St Helens to fill their centre vacancy but is content to play wherever he is needed by both club and country.

"This year I’ve played back row - but I’ve spent most of my career in the centre," he said.

"We’ve got a lot of depth. We’ve still got Kris Inu and Kieran Foran that we’re excited to see. I’ve no preference; I just want to get that black jersey."
