Wigan Warriors coach Maguire pleased by spirit versus Huddersfield Giants
WIGAN coach Michael Maguire paid tribute to the character of his side after they held off a spirited Giants display to claim their 38-30 victory to put them four points clear at the top of Super League.
The Warriors were twice reduced to 12 men and Huddersfield took full advantage of the sin-binning of forwards Joel Tomkins and Andy Coley to score two of their six tries.
“It put a lot of pressure on us,” admitted Maguire. “We had to fight for everything and I’m really pleased for the boys.
“We got ourselves in a tough position at times throughout that game, but they kept working hard for each other and we were lucky enough to come out the right end.
“When we had the ball we knew we had to complete and get down the other end because the other team are quality.
“Every time we got down into their area, we came up with some points so it was pleasing from that point of view.
“But the key for the games ahead is to make sure we don’t put ourselves in that position too often.
“This was a very good win, because Huddersfield are a strong side and play a good brand of footy.”
