Huddersfield Giants Josh Griffin grabs hat trick as Giants Under 20s beat Rhinos
JOSH GRIFFIN made up for the disappointment of missing out on playing for Batley in the Northern Rail Cup final by grabbing a hat trick of tries as the Giants secured an excellent 36-18 Valvoline Cup triumph over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
With Bulldogs boss Karl Harrison keeping faith with the squad that had been involved in the Cup competition from day one, the dual-registered Griffin, below, was back at his senior club for the weekend.
That was also the case with Kyle Wood, who is back at Huddersfield after a Super League loan spell at Castleford Tigers, and both of the youngsters were at the heart of the Giants’ Under 20s triumph in a curtain-raiser to the Leeds-Huddersfield Super League fixture.
Promising centre Griffin was clearly the star of the show with his three tries, although scrum-half Wood was running him close for the man-of-the-match award until he was sent off for his part in a mass second-half brawl.
Griffin was also sin-binned, along with Leeds prop Brad Singleton, in the aftermath of the incident, which gave the Rhinos the opportunity to give the final scoreline some respectability.
Huddersfield were leading 36-0 when the flare-up took place, and the home side made the most of having the extra-man advantage by grabbing three late converted scores.
That obviously took some of the gloss off an excellent Giants’ win, in which winger Perry Whitely scored two tries and Wood, Danny Ansell and Josh Barlow added one each, with Greg Worthington landing four goals.
The Giants Under 16s Scholarship side lost 42-12 to a Balmain side that was made up of a number of Under 18s players in the second game of their historic tour to Australia. Full details tomorrow.
