GIANTS fan Steve Hibbert is living proof that having lifesaving surgery can’t dent your sporting passion.

Even when the 53-year-old from Golcar was spending three years on kidney dialysis he was still able to watch his beloved Huddersfield in Super League action.

And within three years of having a kidney transplant in 2005, he was jetting off to Australia for the World Cup.

But not content with that, the insurance assessor has now just returned from a trip to Australia and New Zealand for the Four Nations tournament.

It’s an achievement that has earned the former Underbank loose forward respect from rugby league fans on both sides of the world – although the man himself is just taking it all in his stride.

“My philosophy has always been to live life to the full, and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” he said.

“Obviously, the kidney problems have made things a bit difficult for me, but following the Giants has really kept me going.

“Over the years, they have been a fantastic tonic for me.

“I was there in the dark days when they were only getting a few hundred watching them, so to see where they are now has done me a power of good.

“And since I’ve had the transplant I’ve been able to go on a couple of tours Down Under.

“So I’d like to think my example will give others hope.

“Following the Giants really has kept me going through some very tough times.”

And he is confident they will provide him with more uplifting moments next year.

“With Nathan Brown in charge and with the quality of the squad. I just can’t wait!” he added.
