EVENTS off the field at Salford have created as much interest as those on it.
Just 11 games into the season and the City Reds are already onto their third coach.
Shaun McRae’s stress-related illness and then the departure of Reds legend Malcolm Alker for disciplinary reasons meant Phil Veivers is now in charge at The Willows.
His start couldn’t have been much better as he led the Reds to a stunning 56-16 home triumph over Bradford Bulls.
But that was quickly followed by the 60-0 home thrashing by Warrington on Good Friday as Salford were brought back down to earth with a bump.
There’s no doubt, however, that on their day, the side from Manchester are capable of turning on the style, especially with the likes of inspirational half-back Daniel Holdsworth around.
And with a pack that has been boosted by the likes of Stephen Wild, they certainly deserve respect.
EVERYTHING at Salford City Reds revolves around Daniel Holdsworth.
The 26-year-old scrum half was signed from Canterbury Bulldogs ahead of the 2010 season and arrived at The Willows with plenty of Australian NRL experience, having also been with Giants coach St George Dragons earlier in his career.
Holdsworth immediately proved to be the City Reds’ top performer – he ran the show in his side’s big home win over the Giants at the same time last year – and was quickly handed a three-year contract extension.
On top of that, he was named Salford’s captain for the 2011 season following the retirement of Malcolm Alker and is leading the side by example.
