NATHAN BROWN is staying on as head coach of Huddersfield Giants.

The 37-year-old Australian has today agreed a 12-month contract extension to remain in charge at the Galpharm Stadium until the end of the 2012 Super League season.

Brown originally joined the Giants from top Australian NRL club St George Dragons for the start of the 2009 season on a three-year deal and in his first season led Huddersfield to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley, where they were beaten by Warrington Wolves.

He then marked his second year at the helm by taking the Giants to the play-off semi-final - and one game away from the Super League Grand Final - for the first time.

This year, Brown's Giants are second in Super League at the halfway stage of the season and are in the quarter-final of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

But those successes caught the attention of clubs back in Australia, and he had been strongly linked with the vacant coaching position at Penrith Panthers for next season.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis said “This will be viewed as great news by everyone connected with our club and a wonderful fillip for us all as we enter the second half of the season sitting second in Super league and still in the Challenge Cup.

Our progress under Nathan has been excellent and to have him as our head coach for a further season is simply marvellous. We have respected his wishes in making this decision in his own time as it’s a big call for him to make but we are naturally delighted that he remains here with his family in West Yorkshire.

We can all now knuckle down to our respective tasks in the knowledge that we have a man at the helm who we all feel here can bring silverware to this great club which is our objective. I am sure that the fans will show their appreciation to Nathan and his family in the coming weeks ahead and like them look forwards to watching his team evolve and improve as we progress this and now next year too. ”
