HUDDERSFIELD Giants found their new temporary Halifax home to their liking as they powered to a 40-18 triumph over Castleford Tigers.
It was the Giants’ 12th Super League victory of the season as they returned to second place in the table with a seven-try display.
But the victory could have been achieved at some cost with the inspirational Danny Brough suffering an ankle injury which is set to keep him on the sidelines for some time, possibly up to six weeks.
That clearly took the gloss off a win in which the Giants were the dominant force throughout the contest and gained revenge for a narrow defeat at the Tigers in the second week of the season.
Brough’s departure also proved a major talking point, with the scrum half now missing out on making his England debut in Friday’s Origin clash against the Exiles at Headingley.
But his injury wasn’t the only topic of conversation, with the final build-up to the contest a farce.
First of all, due to Sky TV technical difficulties, the kick-off was delayed from 5.45pm to 6.00pm.
But due to an even bigger farce it was a further 10 minutes before the action eventually got under way.
As soon as the sides marched onto the field for the warm-up it was clear there was a big problem.
With both teams wearing white shirts it was clear no game could start.
Although the Rugby Football League could be holding an investigation into what went wrong, it appeared as if Castleford should have been wearing their normal yellow shirts.
In the earlier meeting at the Tigers, Huddersfield wore their claret and gold shirt, which means they would be using their white tops this time.
As a result, Castleford were forced to wear last year’s Halifax shirts, although that caused the second delay.
With the kit locked away in the Shay sheds, officials got in contact with Halifax club shop worker Hilda Hardy, who was the only person to have the key!
She immediately had to stop her gardening and race to the ground – just after 6.00pm.
And the game could finally get started – although initially the Tigers probably wished it hadn’t
Within four minutes the ‘hosts’ had struck for the first time.
Scott Grix showed everyone he had fully recovered from being knocked out and stretchered off at Hull the week before by racing across the face of the Castleford defence and feeding Leroy Cudjoe to slice the cover and score with ease for Danny Brough to convert.
