Wigan boss thinks Huddersfield Giants will rise again after defeat

DELIGHTED Wigan coach Michael Maguire wouldn’t be surprised if he met the Giants in a major play-off encounter later in the year.

The Warriors produced arguably their best performance of the season to beat Huddersfield 46-12 to inflict the heaviest defeat on coach Nathan Brown’s side so far in Super League XVI.

England full-back Sam Tomkins was Wigan’s hero with three of their eight tries while Pat Richards contributed 18 points as the champions followed up their comprehensive win over St Helens to complete the double over the high-flying Giants.

But Maguire doesn’t think he’s seen the last of the men from West Yorkshire.

"We were really pleased with this performance," said Maguire.

"Huddersfield are a tough team to play against. They’ve got quality players, they’re well-organised and well coached.

"I’m sure they’ll remain up there for the next few months and I wouldn’t be surprised if we had to face them again before the season’s over.

"We did a lot of homework on them, because we knew how much of a threat they’d pose, so we’re obviously delighted with this result.

"And it’s crowned a good couple of weeks for us.

"There was a good crowd for this game and we wanted to put on a good performance for them.

"To back up from last week was very pleasing."

Maguire was delighted with the comeback of Gareth Hock.

The 27-year-old back-rower, whose two-year ban for cocaine use ran out 48 hours before kick-off, received a rapturous reception from the bumper 19,169 crowd at the DW Stadium when he was introduced as a substitute 24 minutes into the match.
