SHAUN LUNT is hoping the Giants’ recent poor run of form proves a blessing in disguise.
After taking the start of the Super League XVI season by storm, Huddersfield’s impressive challenge has lost a lot of momentum.
The Giants still remain fourth in the top-flight table, although Catalan Dragons are breathing down their necks, just one point behind in fifth.
And Lunt believes that with a whole host of key players looking to return after injury – including the man himself following major groin surgery – the Giants can finish the regular season on a high and begin their play-off assault in the best possible shape.
Huddersfield host Harlequins at the Galpharm on Sunday and then entertain Leeds Rhinos seven days later in their final League fixtures, with fit-again quintet Lunt, Danny Brough (side strain), Dale Ferguson (back), Keith Mason (knee) and Joe Wardle (hamstring) all back in the frame.
Lunt will need to undergo a late fitness test before a final decision is taken on whether he returns this weekend or next.
But the 24-year-old England hooker is just excited to be back on the brink of action, particularly as he admits he’s such a bad watcher.
“The last few months have been torture, and what’s made it even worse has been seeing the boys struggling to get the wins,” said Lunt, who was expected to be out for the rest of the season after he underwent the surgery two months ago.
“But with several players coming back from injury, we know we can finish the regular season strongly and get back to our best form in the play-offs.
“The one thing about the way we’ve been playing in recent months is that people have been starting to write us off, which could be good for us.
“As a group, we’re more than happy going under the radar, getting our players back and taking everyone by surprise in the play-offs.
“It means there will be less pressure on us when the really big matches come around, and that suits us just fine.
“With the home games against Quins and Leeds we know we’ve still got time to re-discover our best form before the play-offs get going.
“We know our season is far from over!”
