DANNY BROUGH produced an all-round masterclass to help the unconvincing Huddersfield Giants return to winning ways and remain firmly in the leading Super League XVII pack with victory in the capital.

On a day when Huddersfield struggled to fire from start to finish, the visiting scrum half was a shining light in the scrappiest of contests.

The inspirational No7 produced a vital interception score to finally spark the Giants after a lacklustre opening quarter.

Then in the second half, he twice produced crucial try-scoring kicks for Kevin Brown and Joe Wardle to seal a victory that probably won’t be remembered for too long!

Their first-half performance was far from impressive.

In fact, for the opening 20 minutes they looked decidedly shaky.

Apart from a Joe Wardle break after being put through by Kevin Brown, the Giants were predominantly on the back foot.

It was certainly no great surprise when the Broncos took the lead after 11 minutes through a close-range try from the powerful Antonio Kaufusi and Michael Witt added the conversion.

More good Broncos work almost forced the visitors to concede a second on several occasions.

But against the run of play, Huddersfield managed to draw level midway through the half when the alert Brough gathered a Witt pass on his own 20 and had the pace to beat the chasing Kieran Dixon and then have a enough breath to land the touchline goal.

That seemed to finally settle the Giants down and three minutes later they hit the front for the first time.

Brough failed to gather a pass cleanly 30m out, and as the Broncos stopped waiting for a possibly knock-on, Tim Roby waved ‘play on’ and Leroy Cudjoe took full advantage to weave through a static defence and crash over for a second converted score.

Good work from Brown, Jacob Fairbank and Scott Grix almost brought further reward.

But five minutes before the break, the Broncos came even closer when great last-ditch defence denied David Howell before Michael Robertson put a foot in touch as he collected a high ball in the corner and touched the ball down.

Fortunately, that again acted as a timely wake-up call for the men in claret and gold, and after a David Faiumu burst had been halted just short, Jermain McGillvary had the ball stripped in a two-man tackle and Brough added the extras to make it 14-6 at the break.

That became 20-6 within a minute of the restart as Brough's kick on the last tackle was fumbled by the home defence under the posts and Brown had the simple task of putting pressure on the ball for converted try No3.

The Broncos, however, proved they were far from finished when Kaufusi crashed over for his second converted try in the 53rd minute to reduce the gap to eight points – before Brough again settled his side’s nerves.

Within three minutes of the London score, the Giants worked the position for Brough to collect on the sixth tackle.

His accurate kick to the corner was collected superbly by Luke George to keep the ball alive and feed Wardle to squeeze in at the corner.

Again, the battling Broncos refused to wave the white flag, and Luke Dorn was denied a try when it was ruled he was offside from a Craig Gower kick-through.

They did eventually get a third reward with five minutes remaining when Jamie O’Callaghan shook off a couple of half-hearted challenges to charge over for an unconverted score in the corner.

But three minutes later Cudjoe made the game safe when he showed great strength to take three defenders over the line for his second try of the contest and for Brough to land his fifth goal.
