HI, it’s Eorl here.
It’s amazing what a couple of new faces can do to lift the spirits of a squad.
At a time when we’ve been doing it so tough, it’s been like a breath of fresh air to welcome Brett Ferres and Kieron Purtill to the club.
A lot of the current squad already know these two really well, and they’ve both wasted little time making a very positive contribution to the cause – in their own very different ways, of course.
Starting with Brett, who we already know’s a good lad and top player, he wasted no time at all making his mark – not that Jason Chan was overly impressed, however.
In training last week, Channy took the ball up against Brett, who completely creamed him with a monster hit.
I think it took Channy by surprise, although it will at least knock some sense into him!
But I think that’s just what we needed to see from our ‘new boy’ this week. We wanted to see him bring a fresh, positive approach to training, and that’s what he’s done from day one.
As well as that, Brett’s shown he’s prepared to listen and learn – everything the coaches have been telling him.
And one of those coaches is obviously Kieron.
To be honest, I found it a little bit weird when he turned up with Baloo (new head coach Paul Anderson) for training this week.
All of a sudden I felt as if I’d stepped back in time to four years ago when these two were last in temporary charge following the sacking of Jon Sharp.
I can still remember quite vividly when they took over at the Giants in the second half of the 2008 season, largely because it was a period I thoroughly enjoyed.
I enjoyed their approach to training – even though it was really tough – and I’m already enjoying the methods they’re adopting now.
These methods are bound to take time for us to pick up, but I’m sure they’ll soon start to pay off.
Baloo’s a very smart coach and he’s deserved his chance to step up for a few years, so we know what he introduces will benefit all of us.
And I know Kieron’s ideas will also be universally received.
Kieron’s a very smart bloke and knows the game inside out, so if he starts talking you know it’s well worth paying attention.
Clearly, it will take a bit of time before we’ve learned the new systems they’re hoping to introduce, but once things start to fall into place, then watch us go!
