LUKE O’DONNELL has left the Giants by mutual agreement.
The 32-year-old loose forward – a former Australian international – will return home at the weekend and is expected to continue his career in the NRL with Sydney Roosters.
It’s a clean break, with Giants managing director Richard Thewlis saying the move was instigated by the injury-troubled player and granted by the Super League leaders.
“Deep down, neither Luke nor the club wanted this outcome of an early release, but the reality is that Luke is financially in a different place now to that envisaged when he joined at the start of the 2011season,” said Thewlis.
“The changing regulations in respect of off-shore pensions have caused him significant difficulties – as I am sure they must for other overseas players in the UK – but fortunately for him an opportunity has arisen back home which will help him going forward and we don’t want to stand in his way.”
O’Donnell made 30 appearances for the Giants in just over two seasons at the club, with his last game coming in the 40-4 opening-night win at St Helens 11 days ago.
The Giants will face Wigan on Saturday (3pm) at home in the Super League due to Town’s FA Cup win.
