THE Heritage Project is quietly steam-rolling along behind the scenes.
Since its inauguration in October last year, the website now boasts player and match records from every match between 1895 and 1994.
It also includes players’ registrations from 1906 to 1939, 22 Year Books, 30 testimonial brochures, 50 programmes, fixture cards from 1881 to 1906, and lots, lots more.
If you have not yet had a browse, check out www.HuddersfieldRLHeritage.co.uk.
In addition, the Collectors’ Cards will soon be available for purchasing. There are two sets, each containing 50 cards. One set is of Huddersfield’s Greats, whilst the other showcases Fartown Giants. At a mere £5 for each set, these will be a superb addition to your own Fartown/Giants collection.
Continuing our occasional series about the history of the club, we report on the mid-nineties.
In 1993, six teams were invited to take part in an inaugural European Clubs Championship. The six teams consisted of two from the USSR (Tiraspol and Moscow Magicians), two from France (Carcassonne and XIII Catalan) and Batley and Huddersfield.
Only weeks before departure, the plans collapsed as both Soviet clubs pulled out due to financial difficulties, closely followed by Batley, while Carcassonne had just five players available due to a players’ strike!
This left just Huddersfield and XIII Catalan to meet in the ‘final’ in Barcelona. The lead changed hands three times before Huddersfield held on for a 23-22 triumph.
Huddersfield took a share in the new McAlpine Stadium (now known as the John Smith’s Stadium) in 1994. In 1995 the team reached the final of the Second Division Premiership competition at Old Trafford, where they were beaten by Keighley Cougars.
Back to HGSA.
We are currently running a Giant Teasers Quiz. For example, what area of Huddersfield is represented by the cryptic clue ‘Spotty rocks’? Or which nursery rhyme is this ‘OKCWAMOS’?
There are 50 brain-teasers for you to puzzle over. It’s excellent value at £1 per sheet. You can download them from the website, but you will need a special code to prove that you have paid for them!
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, April 2 at Turnbridge WMC, so why not join us there for pre- and post-match drinks?
For further information on all the above please visit our website, www.GiantsSupporters.co.uk, or contact Dave Calverley, on 07887 878 425.
