WHAT a fantastic year this is for the town of Huddersfield!
The Giants have made an impressive start to their Super League XVIII campaign.
“Don’t be too concerned about our early games, we shall only get better,” were the words coming out of the club in the pre-season.
If that’s the case, the mouth waters!
This coming Sunday’s game has been designated a ‘Sporting Memories’ match.
In partnership with the Sporting Memories Network, this will allow us to collect oral memories and memorabilia in addition to promoting awareness of dementia.
Teams of children will be on hand to interview spectators. Fans will also be invited to write their memories and pin them onto ‘Memory Boards’.
The members of the Heritage Project are working flat out behind the scenes.
You will be able to view the fruits of their labours at the Tolson Museum towards the end of October when a six-month exhibition will open to the public. Not only will there be rugby memorabilia, it will also show what life was like in World War One.
In the meantime, why not browse the superb website: www.HuddersfieldRLHeritage.co.uk.
Shortly after that, Huddersfield will be playing host to an International Rugby League World Cup Celebration Day. People from all over the rugby world will converge on Huddersfield for this fantastic event organised largely by the Heritage Project.
The day after, the John Smith’s Stadium will play host to the England v Ireland World Cup match.
As part of the preparations for this game, the World Cup itself will be on show at various events and venues throughout Kirklees.
A local brewery, Owenshaw Mill Brewery (Sowerby Bridge) will be brewing an English Bitter and an Irish Stout especially for the occasion!
To bring us right back to the present, next Monday (March 4) will see HGSA join with the Giants to bring you a Fans Forum.
Doors will open at 7.00pm for a 7.15pm start. Entry is free for HGSA members and season-ticket holders, £2 for others.
Answering questions will be Giants MD Richard Thewlis, our captain, Mr Inspirational Brough, our Old Boy Chris Thorman, plus one other special guest. James Deighton (Radio Leeds’ Mr Rugby) will compere the evening.
As you can see, 2013 has plenty to offer, not just fans of The Greatest Game, but the wider population.
