Huddersfield Giants captain Kevin Brown's column: No hiding place after Wakefield loss

THERE were one or two looks of disbelief over last weekend’s Super League results, with none of the top four teams managing to win.

We suffered that bitterly disappointing defeat at Wakefield, while leaders Warrington were stunned at home by Salford and Wigan and St Helens drew at Castleford and Bradford respectively.

All four sides obviously had a number of players involved in the England v Exiles Origin match less than 48 hours earlier, with many either doubling-up or being rested.

On top of that, the conditions on the Sunday were a real leveller, with the heavy rain making it impossible to play an expansive game. It wasn’t much fun at all!

But let’s make one thing clear.

There’s no way we’re going to hide behind these facts, or any others for that matter, and use them as an excuse for the way we played.

The bottom line is that we let our standards slip badly and we paid the price for that. The only ones to blame for what happened at Wakefield last weekend were us, and it’s us who now need to do something about it to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I thought the likes of Joe Wardle and Danny Kirmond had a dig, but for most of us it was a performance to forget, me included.

So roll on tomorrow’s home game against Catalan Dragons at The Shay!

We’ve been involved in two tough encounters with our French friends over the past few months and this has all the makings of another closely-contested encounter.

Just like ourselves, they have a tough pack and like to spread the ball about a bit, so it should prove a great spectacle for the Sky TV viewers.

And after the events at Wakefield the other day, I think we all feel we’ve got something to prove. We’ve also got a number of players returning this weekend, including our Exiles duo David Faiumu and David Fa’alogo.

I really enjoyed the Origin game, and I’m sure it could become a very popular event on the rugby league calendar, and our boys didn’t let anyone down.

In fact, I thought Fuey, Doof and England’s Luke Robinson all did Huddersfield proud.

Robbo was clearly one of England’s most effective attacking options, while Fuey and Doof were also both effective when they came off the bench.
