Huddersfield Giants captain Kevin Brown's column: Training takes me back two years to Wembley defeat

I DON’T know what it is about rugby league players.

But we’re all pretty much addicted to training.

And last weekend was another shining example.

Because of the Challenge Cup final, we had a couple of days off to refresh our bodies.

It wasn’t a weekend for drinking or having a mini trip overseas.

This break was all about rest and relaxation with family and friends – up to a point that is.

Although it’s good to put your feet up, it was no time at all before I felt the urge to go to the gym.

And as soon as I stepped in – surprise, surprise, there were some of my teammates who felt exactly the same way.

We all put ourselves through it a bit, but we also made sure we didn’t over-do it and risk leaving ourselves short of energy when the crucial training sessions resumed.

Fortunately, I think we got the balance about right, judging by the way we all set about our work ahead of Sunday’s home game against Harlequins.

In fact, as I was working flat-out this week and feeling better than ever, it took me back to how the squad was looking this time two years ago.

For those who need reminding, that was 2009 and the week after we’d been beaten by Warrington in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

That was the game which ended my season due to a knee injury, forcing me to join several of my teammates on the sidelines.

On top of that, there were others who were fatigued and were desperately in need of a rest, but couldn’t because we didn’t have enough bodies.

As a result, the final training sessions of the year weren’t the greatest and this was reflected in our performances in the play-off.

The sessions we’ve held this week couldn’t have been in sharper contrast, and I just hope that’s a sign of things to come!
