Worthington's goal was neatly created by Ahmed, Andy Holdsworth and Mirfin, who turned smartly on the edge of the box to tee up his skipper for only a third goal of the season and a first since August.
It set the tone for a brilliant first-half display from Worthington, whose bravery in attacking some crunching tackles set an example for everyone in blue and white stripes.
Wednesday's only moments of hope came when Paul Rachubka, appearing to be fouled, misjudged a Jon Paul McGovern corner in the first half and when Craig Rocastle - who was lucky to be booked only once - was brought down by the combined might of Mirfin and Mendes in the box.
The frustration clearly told on loanee Alex Bruce, the son of Steve who was baited when he played at the Galpharm for Oldham a few weeks ago and again took horrendous stick from the Kilner Bank.
His scything knee-high challenge on Ahmed after losing control of the ball and his senses was both late and dangerous and referee Lee Mason, who had a good game overall, had no hesitation in showing a straight red.
From the resulting free-kick, Pawel Abbott should have put the result beyond doubt from Andy Booth's flick on, but he fired over from close range and Wednesday were at least in touch.
Visiting keeper Paul Gallacher, who launched some awful free-kicks way too deep, had to save from Booth just after the break and then did well to tip a Danny Schofield header onto the bar from Ahmed's inswinging corner.
Schofield, in fact, did well when going on for Abbott while Mendes showed glimpses of his best form both on the wing and up front.
