Danny Schofield hesitated twice with the sort of chances you would expect him to bury while McCombe, Tony Carss and sub Gary Taylor-Fletcher all tried their luck before Abbott gave the faithful something to cheer.

In between times, Blackburn continued to counter with real menace, going close through David Bentley, Dickov and Emerton, whose flying header was brilliantly palmed away by Paul Rachubka. Unfortunately, Zurab scored from the corner.

Town had penalty appeals for handball waved away as Town's fans roared them back into the game, but it wasn't quite enough.

Blackburn were a class above and deserved to win, but Town were certainly not disgraced.
