HOW ironic that in a match staged to honour a player who has so far scored 125 times for the club, Town could not find a cutting edge.

On this evidence, Huddersfield's bookies will not be inundated with punters wanting to bet on Real Sociedad winning the Primera Liga.

But the Spaniards still presented a tough pre-season test for Peter Jackson's side, so it was pleasing Town created the better chances, even if they couldn't put any way.

It was also encouraging that they kept a clean sheet, giving new goalkeeper Matt Glennon a big boost on his first home outing.

On the occasions the visitors got past centre-backs Nathan Clarke and Martin McIntosh, the big stopper showed a good range of skills in keeping Sociedad, who made nine changes at the break, at bay.

Fabio Felicio's 13th-minute shot wasn't too taxing, but Glennon showed confidence to punch clear when Aitor caused problems with a long throw in the 39th minute.

Then he stooped to hold an effort by Prieto, who had earlier had a shot blocked by McIntosh, who also did well to deny former Sheffield Wednesday frontman Darko Kovacevic as he drilled the ball goalwards on 24 minutes.

On the hour, Glennon was quickly out of his box to tidy up as Diaz de Cerio sprinted onto a long ball over the top, then four minutes later, he made his best save of the game, when Gerardo drove in a free-kick from the Sociedad left.

While first-half keeper Riesgo made a couple of early slips, one of them allowing Booth to put in a cross which floated tantalisingly for a goal kick, it wasn't until the 36th minute that a genuine home effort arrived.

Danny Schofield dinked the ball in from the Town left, and Mark Hudson unleashed a well-struck low shot which was tipped around the near post for a corner.

Jackson made a couple of changes at half-time, bringing on Michael Collins for Jon Worthington, who had been yellow carded for a foul on Novo, and Chris Brandon for Gary Taylor-Fletcher, and Town had their liveliest spell of the game between the 60th and 70th minutes, by which time Pawel Abbott had come on for Luke Beckett.

First Schofield's shot from a Danny Adams pass was deflected for a corner, from which McIntosh and Abbott both stabbed at the loose ball before it was cleared.

Then Abbott whistled a drive into the side-netting before feeding Brandon, whose shot was saved by Chilean international keeper Bravo.

Gerardo cut through Town a little too easily for comfort in the 71st minute - luckily the danger fizzled out - before Alonso chipped over.

But Town could have won it with five minutes to go, when Booth nodded down Andy Holdsworth's cross, only for Schofield to shoot wide, much to his frustration.
