They had come close to levelling in the 40th minute, when striker Dave Hibbert's header from winger Ritchie Partridge's corner beat Matt Glennon but was cleared off the line by Mark Hudson.
And as they put Town under pressure early in the second half, the impressive Hibbert, at Millmoor on a six-month loan from Preston, rose to head Partridge's cross goalwards, only for Glennon to fingertip the ball against the bar.
Had either of those gone in, it would have been a different story, but as it was, Town will be delighted at having kept a clean sheet as they chalked up their first win in four matches one home turf (Chesterfield, Yeovil and, of course, Barnsley all won at the end of last season).
Defeat in Huddersfield is nothing new for Rotherham, who have lost in 11 out of a dozen league visits since winning 3-0 at Leeds Road in 1964.
And while some may say they were hard done by to lose by such a margin, Town certainly deserved the victory which put smiles back on faces after the 2-1 opening-day setback at Gillingham.
As well as the enforced Abbott for Booth change, Jackson chose to bring in David Mirfin for Martin McIntosh and Chris Brandon for Danny Schofield, and it will be interesting to see which XI he chooses to face Bristol City on Saturday.
