For the first, Nathan Clarke's header dropped to Maynard, whose shot was half blocked by the stand-in skipper. As Varney then tried to pounce, he was fouled in the box by Clarke, but referee Steve Tanner let play flow and Maynard was left clear to drill the ball under Glennon.
For the second, Varney beat Clarke to flick on another long Williams clearance and Maynard held off challenges by Holdsworth and David Mirfin - being on the floor at one stage - before regaining his balance and composure to score.
It was an indictment of Town's defending on the day, although Crewe looked sharper all around the park and had a midfield unit which supported the attack with much more fluidity than Town's.
Glennon enhanced his growing reputation as first choice with three top-class saves from Varney - a one-on-one in the second half especially catching the eye - and his overall work in wet conditions was of the highest order.
Jackson sent on Tom Clarke, Pawel Abbott and, later, Matt Young, who did well, to try and unhinge Crewe with a 4-3-3 set-up, but Town failed to create a single shot on target in the second half and Crewe rode out the game both deservedly and easily to look like an up-and-coming force.
