Bradford City 0, Huddersfield Town FC 1

DEAN WINDASS was forced to postpone a party and Bradford were left bitter as 10-man Town celebrated a derby win which was far more beer and butties than champagne and canapes.

In rugby, they call it `doing it ugly', and while Town's performance in a full-blooded clash at Valley Parade was not the prettiest they've ever given, it was certainly effective.

Mark Hudson's 25th-minute header - only his fifth goal for the club but his second at Bradford in as many seasons - brought Town their second successive win on their neighbours' turf, condemning the Bantams to their first home defeat in 12 matches.

Veteran striker Windass had been desperate to make the scoresheet - one more goal will give him a career tally of 200 - but, like his teammates, was unable to get past his distant relation Matt Glennon.

"We'd heard Dean had a special 200 T-shirt on under his top to show their fans," said Danny Adams.

"Well he can keep wearing it for another week now!"

Windass did have some influence on the game, for it was his tangle with Adams which, while it appeared to be six of one and half a dozen of the other, brought the Town left-back a caution after only three minutes.

He was therefore walking a tightrope, and came unstuck when a 72nd-minute cruncher on right-back Nathan Doyle brought another yellow card and subsequent red from Hertfordshire referee Keith Hill, who cautioned three other Town players (Andy Holdsworth, Matty Young and Jon Worthington) and two of Bradford's (Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Doyle).

Indeed in the early stages, there were far more free-kicks than chances as Town, with skipper Worthington making his first start in 10 as part of a five-man midfield, ensured they weren't going to be outmuscled.

Bradford tried to play a close passing game, but were never able to get into their stride, and it was Town who had the first effort on goal in the fourth minute, when the impressive Martin McIntosh fired in a 20-yard free-kick which Jamaican keeper Donovan Ricketts parried.
