Ternent had to run the gauntlet from a section of the travelling faithful after his side were comprehensively outplayed by Darren Ferguson’s well-organised and incisive team.

While Town urgently need to climb away from the lower reaches of League I, Posh, promoted from League II last season, look capable of going straight through into the Championship.

That is as long as they can keep their manager, who is being linked with Queens Park Rangers, and their best players at the club.

While a delegation from QPR was said to have been at London Road on Saturday, Posh reportedly turned down a £2m bid from West Brom for Mackail-Smith prior to the game.

The 24-year-old former Dagenham and Redbridge striker was unable to add to his 10-goal tally against Town.

But he caused constant problems, and so too did the second member of the home club’s ‘Mac attack’, former Grays Athletic frontman Aaron Mclean, back after injury for a first start since early September.
